Silvia was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2019. A few months prior, she had suddenly developed anxiety and mood swings accompanied by a sharp, burning sensation on her breast. Thoughts of a cancer diagnosis had lingered in her mind due to her family history. Unfortunately, Silvia was not wrong about her suspicion.
Sixteen rounds of chemotherapy were effective in shrinking the size of the two tumors in her breast. By September 2020, Silvia would undergo a mastectomy. Daily medication and routine check-ups at the DHR Health Advanced Care Center continued into this year.
When Silvia was told she needed radiation, she worried about the cost of treatment. She had not been able to sell clothes and shoes at the local flea markets like she used to since her diagnosis.
Upon advice from her patient navigator, Silvia applied for assistance from our Renaissance Cancer Foundation. She was elated upon approval for funds. “I thank everyone that gives to the Foundation to help people like me that don’t have the means to pay,” says Silvia, visibly relieved.
The fight against breast cancer is for her children, grandchildren, and her spouse. But mostly, Silvia fights cancer for her: she is on a mission to live life to the fullest.
