Meet OLGA
Olga never missed her annual medical check-ups. Breast fibrosis gave an early start to yearly mammograms at age 30. Although she had no family history of cancer, Olga remained committed to her annual check-up routine. Little did she know her discipline would save her life.
From one year to another, Olga’s mammogram results changed. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was Stage 1 since it was detected early.
A few months later, a lumpectomy was performed by Dr. Carlos Garcia Cantu from the DHR Health Breast Center of Excellence. A lumpectomy is a surgery to remove cancer or other abnormal tissue from the breast.
The next step in Olga’s journey was twenty sessions of radiation. Emotionally, Olga was ready for it. Financially, however, she was not.
Her patient navigator at the DHR Health Advanced Care Center helped Olga apply for funds from the Renaissance Cancer Foundation.
“I felt a huge sense of relief and so much hope,” says Olga. “Thanks to the Foundation, I was able to sleep soundly for the first time since my breast cancer diagnosis.” Stress had caused terrible insomnia.
Once she is feeling better, Olga is excited to go back to her strict exercise routine. She used to practice kickboxing, weightlifting, and Zumba. For the moment, she is currently doing yoga every morning.
An advocate for wellness of the mind and body, Olga urges all women to schedule their annual medical checkups. “A good attitude helps and working out is also vital for physical and mental health.”
