Meet NICOLASA
At 49 years old, Nicolasa is a devoted housewife. She took care of six children, with only one teenager remaining in the nest. Tending to her family has been her joy. Nicolasa did not expect she would need to be taken care of in return so soon.
A small lump in her lower back became painful in the beginning of last year. The discomfort grew with time. The lump that was once barely visible had grown and changed color. It became increasingly difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position that would not exacerbate the pain the next morning.
In December 2020, Nicolasa underwent surgery to remove what turned out to be a tumor. Biopsy results revealed Ossifying Fibromyxoid Sarcoma: a rare, soft tissue tumor which most commonly arises in the extremities. Her treatment will take place at the DHR Health Advanced Care Center under oncologist Dr. Terence Herman.
The Renaissance Cancer Foundation has assisted with the expenses of 30 sessions of radiation. Despite adversity, Nicolasa remains in good spirits. She thanks all of our patrons that donate to the Foundation. “Even with family by our side to help with some of the costs, many of us cannot afford to pay for all the treatment we need,” says Nicolasa. “Thank you for helping me start treatment as soon as possible.”
Once cancer-free, Nicolasa wants to continue to cherish every moment with her loving family. We wish her a full recovery!
