At 86 years old, Martha has been very mindful of her health all of her life. Her oldest daughter, Martha Elena, has never waited long to take her mother for medical checks when necessary. Both believe it is best to be treated early rather than later.

On March 12, Martha knew something was very wrong. The symptoms were frightening. Without a minute to lose, Martha was rushed to the hospital. Upon discharge, she received a referral to see a gynecologist.

Soon after, she would be advised to visit Dr. Carlos Herrera at the DHR Health Advanced Care Center. A gynecology oncologist, Dr. Herrera’s specializes in the medical and surgical management of women’s cancers such as cervical, endometrial, and ovarian.

Diagnostic studies revealed cervical cancer. An additional two doctors will oversee her care: Dr. Terrence Herman for oncologic treatment and Dr. Carlos Garcia for her radiation therapies.

Cancer has made Martha feel very tired, but she is not going to give up. “I want to get better to be with my children and my grandchildren,” says Martha unable to hold back her tears. “And for your great-grandchildren,” playfully added her daughter while giving her mother a hug. Her great grandchildren love to join Martha’s coloring book therapy for her Parkinson’s disease.

“The Foundation is proof that God exists,” assures Martha Elena on behalf of her mother. She added, “Every person that has donated even a dollar is an angel. You are giving hope to families like us that struggle to finance the cost of treatment.”

Martha will turn 87 years old in late July. We wish her a full recovery for the best birthday celebration!
