Two months ago, Maria underwent surgery to remove a tumor in her abdomen. It was visible, although relatively painless. Her recurring headaches, however, were not without major discomfort.

Biopsy results revealed the tumor that was once in her abdomen was malignant. Further imaging tests would show cancer had spread to other parts of the body — including her head. Sadly, Maria’s constant headaches were caused by two brain tumors.

“I am not afraid, and I am ready to fight,” says Maria. Her sister, Manuela, shares the diagnosis has not stopped Maria from wanting to be as active as she has always been. Drowsiness from the medications and an insistence from both her sister and her daughter to rest have not deterred Maria to do some cleaning around the house. “She is so strong,” says Maria’s daughter Julissa.

Radiation and chemotherapy are in the horizon for Maria. With financial assistance from the Renaissance Cancer Foundation, is now receiving oncologic treatment at the DHR Health Advanced Care Center.

“It was important for all of us that Maria start treatment as soon as possible,” shared Manuela. “One by one, every dollar that has been donated helps save someone’s life. We are forever thankful.”
