At only 34 years of age, Erika isn’t your typical breast cancer patient. Earlier this year, she felt discomfort from a lump on her breast. Not wanting to think the worst, she delayed getting it looked at. However, a sharp, burning sensation became increasingly worse in six months. A mammogram, an ultrasound, and a few visits to the doctor later, Erika was diagnosed with Triple-Negative Breast Cancer.
“My experience at DHR Health has been amazing! Everyone has been so kind, compassionate, and knowledgeable,” remarks Erika. “From the people at the front desk, to the nurses, and of course, the doctors – I know I am receiving the best oncology treatment.”
Beating cancer is not the only goal on Erika’s to-do list. She also wants to educate all women the importance of early detection and medical diagnosis. “It is our responsibility to do self-examinations, to go to the doctor when we feel something is wrong with our body, and to ask a lot of questions,” expresses Erika.
Erika wants other cancer patients to know that they are not fighting alone. She has started fundraising to help uninsured cancer patients in the Rio Grande Valley through the Renaissance Cancer Foundation.
“I don’t want anyone to worry about whether they can afford cancer treatment or not, so I am doing my part to help,” Erika finished with a smile.
